“Rising Matriarch” 2012. Oil based clay on armature, handmade recycled paper, pen and taxidermy eyes. Approximately 6’ x 2’ x 4’.

Created for an exhibition about violence against women and girls at RedLine Denver in 2012. Rising Matriarch was an interactive sculpture that was created throughout the run of the show.

Visitors were asked to write messages reflecting on violence towards women and girls. They were provided with handmade, recycled grey paper and pen or marker. The paper message was placed in a private box when complete. Throughout the run of the exhibition I would form the paper messages onto the clay form to create the elephant’s skin. These messages of grief, strength and hope formed the symbol of a rising matriarch.
